Persuasive Writing and Speech: 1 Credit
Text: The Rulebook for Arguments
In the art of persuasion, the classical trivium comes into its own, as grammar, logic and rhetoric harmonize in the achievement of a winning argument. In this course, students will be able to put to use all the logic and writing skills learned up to now plus some new ideas that will enrich their writing and speaking. A dozen different techniques of classical rhetoric will be explained and practiced. Students will be asked to read and recognize the techniques being used by other authors, practice them in seven short assignments, and eventually put the tools to use in one essay and two short speeches. We are confident that the benefit of this course will be seen not only in persuasive discourse but in all other fields of writing and speaking. This course is set up in our new daily lesson schedule format.
