The Writer’s Workshop takes an approach to teaching writing that is new only because it is so old. Today, rhetoric and composition typically proceed by ignoring what was done for 2500 years in Western education. Gregory Roper, on the other hand, helps students learn to write in the way the great writers of the past learned: by carefully imitating masters of the craft, including Cicero, Thomas Aquinas, Charles Dickens, Sojourner Truth, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway. By living in their workshops and imitating these and other masters, apprentice writers – like apprentice musicians, painters, and blacksmiths of the past – will rapidly improve the complexity of their art and discover their own native voices.
This course in creative writing is different from our other self-paced English courses. Students will be assigned a tutor and enrolled in a small peer group where writing will be shared, critiqued, and celebrated. This is an ideal opportunity for students in their last two years of secondary school to develop advanced composition techniques.
** New: In addition to following the Writer’s Workshop and creative exercises, students taking Creative Writing and Literature will also participate in two of our 5-Week Book Discussions (one chosen from Sept-Dec. and one chosen from Jan-May). Each book discussion involves reading a novel and then spending several weeks through text-based interaction with classmates to consider various aspects and questions. See more details HERE.
PLEASE NOTE: Enrollment in two book discussions is included in the tuition. When you sign up please choose ONE of the first two discussions listed for first semester and ONE from the last two listed for second semester. If you need the book for the discussion, please click that box as well when making your selection.
Creative Writing and Literature is a full year ONE credit on-line course typically done by students in Grade 11 or 12. Each class begins in September of the academic year. Space is limited.
