John Steinbeck’s novel The Pearl is a study on human nature and the consequences of greed. The story is set in a small colonial (19th century) Mexican village where Kino is a poor pearl diver. His wife and child are central characters throughout this family story. When Kino discovers a large and wondrous pearl in the Gulf beds, it seems that fortune has come to thefamily, but this is not the case. Instead, a chain of events leads to disaster.
