This newly updated course in Music Appreciation is an introduction to enjoying and understanding various forms of music in the Western tradition, from medieval and Renaissance styles through to Romantic and Classical. Consideration will also be given to sacred selections and a Christian view of music to glorify God will be applied throughout. The course begins with a biblical perspective on music and then a study of the instruments of the orchestra.
Students will complete readings and regular listening activities on a large variety and number of selections. Selections of performances and recordings used in this course are curated from open-access sources with written guidance. Evaluated work includes written exercises, listening assignments, and two final projects allowing for more exploration in the course themes.
There are no outside books needed for the course; over 100 pages of written material plus listening resources are included with tuition.
This course is intended for students in grade 11-12. Students do not need to be musicians or familiar with note-reading, etc. to take this course.
