Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry is a poignant story about a close-knit community and a deep love for the land. The elderly narrator, Hannah, recounts her life in rural Kentucky, including all the changes that took place from World War 2 to the twenty-first century. With a poetic and nostalgic tone, Berry addresses themes of faith, love and marriage, farming, grief, and the ties of family and community. We will discuss nostalgia, grief in war, place and belonging, and legacy.
