The Chosen by Chaim Potok
Set in Brooklyn during the 1940’s, The Chosen relates the journey to adulthood and deepening friendship of two teen boys of different backgrounds within Jewish conservatism: Reuven whose father is an Orthodox Zionist intellectual, and Danny the son and heir of a mystical Hasidic rebbe. It is a story of struggles familiar to families of all religions: how to relate to dominant fathers, and live one’s own faith in a world in crisis.
